Faces are different now

.
I just stumbled upon Fred Wessel's Egg Tempera paintings. If you choose "Paintings and Drawings" then "Figures" you'll go to his gallery of portraits.

The thing which struck me was the look of the women's faces. They look like 21st century people even though they're in the clothing of a century long ago. Below are a couple of examples. No matter how "old" the garments are, the models look to me like they'd be more comfortable in a pair of 501s.
