Today - March 2nd - is Texas Independence Day.
From the wiki:
Texas Independence Day is the celebration of the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. With this document, settlers in Mexican Texas officially broke from Mexico, creating the Republic of Texas.Texas Independence Day is an official holiday in the State of Texas.
Many thanks to my friend Bill McNeal for suggesting I read T. R. Fehrenbach’s “Lone Star: A History of Texas and the Texans”. What a great insight into how the state was won.
