Here's to the fix it guys

The unsung heros of our lives.

The little flapper thingy in my toilet kept coming loose from it's sleeve. Twice a day for about 2 weeks I had to take the top off the tank and wedge it back on. Then it would work for a few more flushes then come loose again. It was kinda hard to see because the light switch was not working so there wasn't any light. I don't usually use a light and I don't flush that often so I was making do. But it was getting worse and obviously something needed to be done.

It all came to a head about three wees ago when Manny and Amy came over. It was night time so I figured there wouldn't be any "number 2" so I just suggested they not flush. As for the light-there's so much ambient light in my neighborhood that I thought they could get along without it.

As it turns out Manny loves to fix stuff. "What's the flapper mechanism like," he asked. I described it and 10 minutes, and one inspiration later my toilet was good as new. I suppose it would only have taken five minutes if there had been enough light to see.

Next he tackled the light switch. By then it was ten pm and as much as I enjoy an outing to home depot there was no going then. So Manny took the switch out of my hall and installed it in the bathroom. As I use the hall light about twice a year that was fine with me.

But Ed who has been visiting this week with his wonderful wife Donna frowned on the wires hanging out of my hallway wall. He was going to Home Depot anyway, to buy a spring to fix the 19xx VW Camper he and Donna had driven down from Winnipeg so he got a switch at the same time. If it took him 5 minutes to install the new switch I'd be amazed.

Today my "check engine light" came on as I was driving to work. YIKES!!!!! What's a girl to do? So I reached into my console for a pen. A pen? Yep, my wonderful car fixit guy gives out pens with his number on them. He's a smart marketing guy.

So now I'm sitting on the curb while he figures out what's wrong with my car. No fancy waiting room, though I do think I could go inside. Just Ken. But when he comes and tells me what's wrong I trust that everything he suggests will be a good idea and done at a fair price. Quickly, efficiently and honorably.

I love the fixit people. They make my life work.
