"In the beginning was the word." Sound familiar?
In some cases there was something before the word. Like a flower, or a bird. But somehow if I don't know their name they aren't as important to me. And I often find myself spending more time reading an explanation of something than I do actually looking at it.
But why is the flower less valuable because I don't know it's name? What is the name but a label some human gave that lovely thing. Is it really any less lovely because I don't know what other people call it? Sure I can't name it for someone else but I can certainly describe it.
This picture from Adam Bartholl is what got me thinking about all this. Oftentimes I'm more interested in where I am on the map that where I am. It seems pretty silly. If I can't name it, it's not important.
If I can't find it on a map maybe I'm not really there.
