A little moonlight

...
Stuck for something fun to point out to visitors in Austin? Well if you're anywhere near Central Austin you can look for a Moonlight Tower. I won't retell the story, there are lots of articles on the web-including Wiki.

The construction of the towers is really something. They're worth seeking out during the day to get the best sense of how they're put together.

But the real fun comes at night. The lights in the 17 towers are a much whiter color that other streetlights. That's really helpful for spotting them on an evening "Moonlight Tower Scavenger Hunt".

The best drive by ride to view the towers is travelling south on the upper deck of I-35. Once you're familiar with what they look like the game is a bit like bird watching at 70 miles an hour.
Look to the east- "There's one!" Now west- "There's one!" and another...and another!

You can see a good 1/2 dozen just on the 2 mile stretch of the the upper deck. And don't forget the Zilker Tree. Every year the parks dept. strings goodness only knows how many hundreds of lights from the top of the tower to the ground making a wonderful tree visible from I-35 and Mopac alike.

Don't miss a chance to share a bit of what keeps Austin weird. It's fun! Here's a map with all the towers noted. Scavenger Hunt Anyone?
